Meanwhile, this is the fifth increase in the price of a gas cylinder since December. Earlier, in April 2020, the price of a cylinder had gone up to Rs 789.50. For the first time since then, cylinder prices have reached record highs.

Petrol, diesel, and LPG prices were kept stable across the country in the lockout imposed to curb corona. Petroleum companies fix daily fuel rates as the country’s fuel rates are linked to the global market. The price of a gas cylinder is reviewed after 15 days or a month. Companies set fuel prices for retail sales according to global crude oil prices and currency exchange rates.

Consumers will have to pay Rs 794 for gas in Mumbai. It will increase by Rs 25. At present, a 14 kg (subsidized) gas cylinder costs Rs 769. It will increase by Rs 25 from Thursday. In April 2020, the price of a cylinder had reached Rs 789.50. At that time, the cylinder was expected to reach Rs 800. After that, a reduction of around Rs 200 was made. However, since December, the price of gas cylinders has started rising again. Therefore, inflation is likely to skyrocket.

Three price hikes in February

Gas cylinder prices have been rising since December. On December 1, 2020, the price of a cylinder was increased by Rs 50. Then on December 16, 2020, the price of a cylinder went up by Rs 50 again. After that, on February 4, the price of the unsubsidized cylinder was increased by Rs 25. Now, on February 16, the price of a cylinder was Rs 50, while on February 25, the price was increased by Rs 25 per cylinder.
