Black carbon aerosol reaching the high Himalayan regions of the entire Himalayan states of the country, including Uttarakhand, is spoiling the health of glaciers. This has been revealed in the research done by the scientists of the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology.

Research has revealed that black carbon aerosols reaching the Himalayan regions from European countries along the continent of India and Asia are producing artificial heat in the Himalayan regions. As a result, the melting speed of glaciers has accelerated and the glaciers are weakening. Scientists believe that the black carbon aerosol is directly impacting not only the glacier but the entire ecology of the Himalayan region. According to research, black carbon is reaching 0.01 to 04.62 micrograms per cubic meter in the Himalayan regions.

According to the institute’s senior scientist, Dr. PS Negi, black carbon aerosols absorb the sun’s ultraviolet rays and emit them as infrared rays, creating artificial heat. Because of this, the snow line of all glaciers in the Himalayan regions is moving upwards.

According to scientists, monitoring stations have been set up in Bhojwasa and Chidwasa to study the black carbon reaching the Gangotri glacier. Black carbon is being monitored from these stations. This is the first time from the Wadia Institute that black carbon is being monitored along with setting up a monitoring station at Gangotri Glacier. According to scientists, black carbon aerosols are causing the most damage to the glacier after greenhouse gases.

The study conducted through satellite has also revealed that a large amount of black carbon is reaching Himalayan regions through Europe through western disturbance. Research on black carbon by scientists at the Wadia Institute has been published in the international journal Atmospheric Science. The paper also gives information about the damage caused by black carbon to the ecology of the Himalayan region.
