The celebration of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti was started in the year 1870 by Mahatma Jyotirao Phule in Pune. He stood against British rule and played an important role in bringing people together during the freedom movement through Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti. May his valor and contribution always give courage to the people, that is why this birth anniversary is celebrated every year. He was the one who discovered the tomb of Shivaji Maharaj in Raigad, about 100 km from Pune. Later freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak carried forward the tradition of celebrating Jayanti and made the image of Shivaji Maharaj even more popular by highlighting his contribution.
