The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre was a tragic event that occurred on April 13, 1919, in Amritsar, Punjab, India, during the British colonial rule. British troops under the command of Brigadier General Reginald Dyer opened fire on a crowd of unarmed Indian civilians who had gathered in the Jallianwala Bagh, a public garden, to peacefully protest against the arrest and deportation of two national leaders. The firing continued for about 10-15 minutes until the troops ran out of ammunition, leaving hundreds dead and wounded.

The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre was a turning point in India’s struggle for independence from British rule, and it galvanized the Indian people’s resistance against colonial oppression. It was met with widespread condemnation both in India and abroad and led to the formation of the Non-Cooperation Movement, which aimed to boycott British goods and institutions.

General Dyer, who was responsible for the massacre, was initially hailed as a hero by some in Britain but was later censured by the British government and forced to retire. The incident also contributed to a growing demand for self-rule in India and highlighted the brutality of British colonial rule.

Today, the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre is remembered as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for India’s independence and the need to ensure that such atrocities never occur again. The site of the massacre has been turned into a memorial and is visited by thousands of people every year.
