History

International Migrants Day was declared by the United Nations General Assembly on 18 December 2000. On 4 December 2000, UNGA recognized the increasing number of migrants in the world and designated 18 December as International Migrants Day. Since then, International Migrants Day is celebrated every year on 18 December.

Significance

In the year 2000, in view of the increasing number of migrants in the world, the United Nations General Assembly declared 18 December to be celebrated every year as ‘International Migrants Day. In the 21st century, more people live than ever before except in the country in which they were born. While some migrate by choice, others migrate out of necessity. On International Migrants Day this year, the International Organization for Migration has called on the world community to come together and remember the refugees and migrants who have lost their lives.

Activities

The United Nations declaration of International Migrants Day is an important step, offering a rallying point for all concerned with the protection of migrants. Expatriates contribute to building stronger, more resilient communities with their knowledge, networks, and skills. About 281 million people were international migrants in 2020, representing 3.6 percent of the global population. All of these will significantly affect the characteristics and scale of migration in the future and determine what strategies and policies countries should develop to harness the potential of migration while protecting the fundamental human rights of migrants.
