The Consumer Protection Act Bill was passed on 24 December 1986. At the same time, amendments were made to this Act in the years 1991 and 1993. In order to make maximum use of this act, a trade amendment was brought in the month of December 2002. Only after that, this act was implemented on 15 March 2003. However, this act was also amended in the year 1987 but it was fully notified on 5 March 2004.

History

Every year 24th December is celebrated as National Consumer Rights Day in India with a selected theme. The consumer movement in India started in 1966 from Maharashtra. After the establishment of Grahak Panchayat in Pune in 1974, institutions for consumer welfare were formed in many states and this movement grew. The Consumer Protection Bill was passed on 9 December 1986 at the initiative of the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and came into force across the country after the President’s signature. The Consumer Protection Act was passed on this day in the year 1986. Whereas in the years 1991 and 1993 amendments were made in this act.
