India’s 14th and then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh declared 22 December as the National Mathematics Day during the inauguration ceremony of the 125th birth anniversary of Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan at the University of Madras on 26 February 2012. Ramanujan died of tuberculosis at the age of just 32. Till such a young age, he had given about 3500 formulas of mathematics to the world, which even today scientists have not been able to prove completely. Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan was born on 22 December 1887 and died on 26 April 1920. In his short life, he compiled over 3900 mathematical results and equations, and his discoveries, namely the Ramanujan prime and the Ramanujan theta, inspired further research on the subject. The day is celebrated to honor his legacy and his contribution in the field of mathematics.
