Investing in highly efficient vans can be a costly affair for some. In that case, one can choose cost-effective options like a second-hand van and meet various requirements. Several used van dealers offer lucrative deals. Plus, you need to be mindful about having an active van insurance plan as well, which offers extensive coverage and keeps you protected from financial and legal troubles. However, before making a sound decision, one should consider a few things mentioned in the section below.

  1. Inspect the overall condition of a van

A used van can come with some minor scratches and dents that can be easily avoided. However, the problem arises when there are major issues like deformed walls, damaged floorboards etc. So, it is vital to check the condition of a van before purchasing it and ensure it is free from major damages. A second-hand van in decent condition is desirable because buyers do not need to invest in repair costs immediately after purchasing it.

  1. Check for leaks

It is crucial to check a used van’s engine for leaks to avoid sudden engine breakdown in the long run. Additionally, if a second-hand van’s engine oil leaks, it is practical to address this issue at the earliest and eliminate the chances of future expenses.

  1. Check the van tyres’ condition

If a used van’s tyres show excessive wear and tyre, it is wise to not settle for such options. Moreover, one should check the tyre’s depth and its rims’ condition before purchasing a second-hand van.

  1. Opt for a test drive

Ideally, test driving a used van will give clarity on its overall performance, acceleration, handling and other functions. Thus, potential buyers must consider a test drive before buying a second-hand van.

  1. Check the van’s underbody

Individuals residing in coastal areas and planning to buy a second-hand van should inspect a van’s underbody to check the presence of rust. Given the humid temperature, the vehicle components are more prone to rust.

  1. Verify the RC

Inspection of a used van’s registration certificate is necessary for a smooth transfer of ownership. Therefore, one should verify the name, registration date, and other details before purchasing such a van. Any anomaly in the information can result in further complications.

  1. Keep the insurance policy papers handy

Before buying a second-hand van, buyers must ensure the van possesses a valid insurance plan. As per the Motor Vehicle Act, 1989, every vehicle owner should obtain a third-party insurance for commercial vehicles and avoid huge traffic fines. Such a policy offers coverage in case of financial and legal troubles arising due to damages caused to a third-party person, property or vehicle.

So, without a valid van insurance plan, an individual’s legal liabilities increase. Further, the RTO does not register a second-hand van if it is not insured.

  1. Make sure the van has a PUC certificate

Similar to new vans, a used van should also have a valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate. This certificate is proof that the vehicle emissions are as per the standards. In addition, one should check certain details like the test date, expiry date, and testing results and opt for a new certificate if the existing one is nearing its expiry.

  1. Check maintenance record

A used van’s service history is important to factor in because it gives clarity on its maintenance. In this regard, a well-maintained second-hand van eliminates the need for immediate servicing and can run for long hours.

  1. Know about the van history

Individuals purchasing a second-hand van should do proper research before making any commitment. They should try to find out the van’s history in order to get clarity on its current condition. For instance, a high mileage van not used for load-bearing purposes stands a better chance of performing optimally.

Thus, it is evident that the decision to invest in an old van can be daunting for first-timers. That is why they should follow this piece and make an informed decision regarding the purchase of second-hand van conveniently.
