Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Hyundai sales up, M&M disappointed

The new year started well for the auto companies and in January 2021 Maruti Suzuki India sales rose 4.3 percent, Hyundai sales 16 percent and Tata Motors 25 percent, though Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) sales fell 25 percent during this period.
The country’s largest car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI), reported that its total sales in January rose 4.3 percent to 1,60,752 units. The company sold 1,54,123 units in the same period a year ago.

MSI said in a statement that domestic sales during this period grew by 2.6 percent to 1,48,307 units from 1,44,499 units in January 2020. The company said exports grew 29.3 percent to 12,445 units in January from 9,624 units in the same period last year.

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) reported that its total sales in January increased by 15.6 percent to 60,105 units. The company sold 52,002 units in the same period last year. The company said its domestic sales grew 23.8 percent to 52,005 units in January 2020 from 42,002 units in the year-ago period. However, during this period, its exports decreased by about 19 percent.

Tata Motors reported that its total sales in January 2020 increased by 25.27 percent to 59,959 units. The company sold 47,862 units in the same period last year. Tata Motors said in a statement that its home sales grew 28 percent to 57,742 units in the period under review, from 45,242 units in the year-ago period.

The company said that its passenger vehicle sales grew 94 percent to 26,978 units in the reporting period from 13,894 units in the same period last year. The company said sales of its commercial vehicles declined by three percent during this period.

Royal Enfield sales rose eight percent to 68,887 units in January. The company said it sold 63,520 units in the same month last year. Honda car sales doubled to 11,319 units in January 2021. Honda Cars India Limited (HCIL) said on Monday that it had sales of 5,299 units in January 2020.

TVS Motors sales grew 31 percent to 3,07,149 units in the period under review. During this period, the company’s two-wheeler sales grew by 34 percent and total exports by 43 percent. Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) reported that its total sales declined by 25 percent in January 2021 to 39,149 units. The company sold 52,546 units in the same period last year.

During this period, the company’s passenger vehicles sales grew by four percent and exports by 30 percent. However, commercial vehicle sales declined by 47.62 percent. The company said that the sales of its tractors increased by 50 percent to 34,778 units in January 2021.

Sonalika Tractors said in a statement that its tractor sales grew 40 percent to 10,158 units in January 2021 from 7,220 units in January 2020. During this period, the domestic market grew by 46 percent.

Similarly, Ashok Leyland’s sales rose 11 percent to 13,126 units from 12,359 units in the same period last year. Escorts tractor sales grew by 48.8 percent to 9,021 units from 6,063 units in January 2020.
