Black History Month In the United States 2023 Top Quotes, Images, Slogans, Images, Messages, Stickers, Cliparts, and Instagram Captions: In observance of Black History Month In the United States, we should all be more aware and appreciative of the accomplishment and history that Black people have made throughout time. This month is a great opportunity for us as white Americans, Black Americans also known as African Americans or foreigners interested in American culture to learn about the achievements and struggles of Black people around the world. The precursor to Black History Month was created in the United States in 1926, when historian Carter G. Woodson, and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, declared the second week of February to be Negro History Week. This week was chosen because it coincided with Abraham Lincoln’s birthday on February 12 and Frederick Douglass’ birthday on February 14. In the late 1960s, Negro History Week was celebrated by mayors across the United States due to the growing awareness of black identity and the civil rights movements. The idea for this special week came from historian Carter G. Woodson, who also announced it at an ASAALH meeting in Washington DC during that time. He believed that there should be more recognition of black contributions beyond just slavery, which is why his fellow historians supported him.
