Vijay Diwas 2023: Vijay Diwas is an annual celebration in the country, celebrated every year on 16 December. On December 3, 1971, Indira Gandhi was addressing a public meeting in Calcutta. In the evening of the same day, Pakistani Air Force aircraft crossed Indian airspace and started dropping bombs on military air bases like Pathankot, Srinagar, Amritsar, Jodhpur, Agra etc. The background to the war had begun to form as early as 1971. On March 25, 1971, Pakistan’s military dictator Yahya Khan ordered to crush the public sentiments of East Pakistan with military force. This day is celebrated to commemorate India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war. The Kargil War was fought between India and Pakistan on the Line of Control (LOC) in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Army fought bravely and recaptured the famous ‘Tiger Hill’ and other important nearby posts under ‘Operation Vijay’ by recapturing the Pakistani troops in the 1999 Kargil war. On this day in 1999, the Indian Army won Kargir against Pakistan. In this 60-day war on the Kargil hills in Ladakh, the Indian Army had driven out the army of the neighboring country from this area.
