Indira Gandhi Feeder/Canal passing through the States of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan is utilized for drinking and irrigation purposes. In Rajasthan, Indira Gandhi Canal traverses through the western part covering districts of Barmer, Bikaner, Churu, Hanumangarh, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Sriganganagar, Nagaur, Sikar and Jhunjhunu to provide water for drinking and irrigation in these areas. As reported by the Punjab Pollution Control Board and Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board, canal water, as in case of other surface water sources, require conventional treatment and disinfection to make it suitable for drinking purposes. Water supply and sewage management being a State subject, States/Union Territories are vested with their planning, implementation, operation & maintenance, etc.

As per the Public Health Engineering Department, Government of Rajasthan, regular testing of raw and treated water is done at concerned District Laboratories and no deadly chemicals are reported either  in the Indira Gandhi Canal water or in the treated water.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Jal Shakti and Food Processing Industries, Shri Prahlad Singh Patel in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
