Before working for the United Nations or taking a government position in my country, I used to teach children in the slum areas of Lisbon. That’s when I realized that education is the vehicle to destroy poverty and establish peace. The International Day of Education was adopted by Nigeria and 58 other member states. Since then, this day has been celebrated every year with the objective that every child should have access to free and basic education.
