History

The death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on January 30 is celebrated as Martyrs’ Day. On this day in 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was shot dead by Nathuram Godse at the age of 78. This incident shook the whole world. Godse was later arrested and sentenced to death. He alleged that Gandhi was responsible for the partition of the country. Gandhi was assassinated when he was getting up from the evening prayer meeting at Birla House in Delhi. Godse killed Gandhi by shooting him thrice in the chest. On this day the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Defense Minister of India visit the tomb of Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat. All the dignitaries pay tribute to Gandhiji and his contributions to the freedom struggle are remembered.

Significance, and Importance

Martyrs Day is remembered to pay tribute to the great freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the country. Martyr’s Day or Shaheed Diwas is celebrated every year by the nations to pay respect to the soldiers who defended the sovereignty of the nation.

Celebration Activities

On Martyrs’ Day or the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Defense Minister, and service chiefs of India pay tribute to ‘Bapu’ at Delhi’s Raj Ghat. Armed forces salute Indian soldiers and observe a two-minute silence in memory of Mahatma Gandhi and the soldiers who selflessly sacrificed for the country during the freedom struggle.
